# Artwork attribution & sourcing status ## Summary **No third-party meme images are hosted on this site yet.** Every image in the meme wall, the hero, the social preview, and the meme generator's base images is an **original placeholder** built for this project (CRT-styled "SIGNAL PENDING" cards, generated from `scripts/gen_placeholders.py`) — not a real Gnarp Gnarp / alienposting image, and not a redrawn version of the character. This was a deliberate call, not an oversight. Read on for why, and for exactly what to do before launch. ## Why no real meme images were downloaded The brief asked for existing Gnarp Gnarp / alienposting artwork to be sourced, reviewed for reuse terms, and hosted locally. That research was done (see **Research findings** below) — but it turned up no image in this meme's history with a clear, verifiable reuse license: - The character originates from an **individual's edited photo posted to Twitter/X** (see the March 30, 2023 entry below), not from an artist or studio that published it under any open license. - Every downstream copy (Imgflip template, Tenor GIFs, KnowYourMeme's embedded images) is a **re-upload by an unrelated third party**, with no license grant attached — KnowYourMeme's own template page literally lists the uploader as "an Imgflip user," origin unknown. - KnowYourMeme itself hosts these images under editorial/commentary fair use for its documentation project — that does not extend to a memecoin site rehosting the same files. Rather than silently presenting unlicensed third-party artwork as if it were cleared for use, every meme-wall slot below ships as a clearly labeled placeholder with the real source page documented, per the project brief's own fallback instruction ("if an asset's reuse status is unclear, leave a well-designed placeholder ... document what needs approval"). **Before launch, a human needs to either:** (a) get explicit permission from the identifiable original poster(s) below, (b) commission new, wholly-original artwork inspired by the meme's *description* (not a trace or edit of the existing photos) from an artist who assigns you rights, or (c) obtain a stock/licensed asset. Do not simply download the images referenced below and drop them into `assets/images/` without doing one of those first. ## Research findings (meme history) Sourced from Know Your Meme, whose own citations are noted: - **Nov 1, 2022** — Twitter user `@The_ExtraRare` posts a French bulldog puppy photo. Twitter user `@valeriehell1` replies with a green-tinted, antenna'd edit, later named **"Geeble"** by `@redshibe_` (Dec 22, 2022). This is the trend's origin image — an edit of someone else's pet photo, original photographer unidentified. - **March 30, 2023** — Twitter user `@uhyeahbruv` posts a similarly edited photo of a cat (green tint, two antennas), captioned *"boy why you so gnarp gnarp👽."* This tweet is the origin of **Gnarp Gnarp** specifically. Source photo's original photographer is not identified in KYM's writeup. - **April 2023** — the trend spreads across Twitter/TikTok/Instagram as "alienposting" / "zeep glorp," with further green-alien-animal edits (including an alien seal) by other individual posters. - Separately, **"Gnarpy"** (KnowYourMeme's other entry) is a *different, Roblox-specific* character from the game *Regretevator* (2023), whose voice clip traces back to an unrelated 2020 Zoom-classroom recording. Per the project brief, this Roblox character was **deliberately not used** as a reference for this site. References consulted: - — primary reference for Gnarp Gnarp / alienposting origin and spread. Cited/credited on the site's FAQ. - — Roblox *Regretevator* character; confirmed unrelated to the original meme, not used. - — blank caption template, "uploaded by an Imgflip user 3 years ago," no license listed. Format: JPG, 474×392. - — GIF search; individual uploads, no rehosting license reviewed/granted. ## Placeholder inventory — what to replace before launch All files live in `assets/images/`. Replace **in place at the same filename** (or update the path in `index.php` if you rename) once real, cleared artwork is available.
